Carinthian bathing lakes with the best bathing water quality
Evaluations by AGES and the European Environment Agency confirm:
Carinthian bathing lakes have top bathing water quality
The quality of Austrian bathing waters is regularly tested and published by AGES (Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety) and
the EEA (European Environment Agency) according to uniform European criteria
. Carinthia's bathing lakes
perform very well in the current evaluations (2 June 2025), consistently receiving a rating of
‘excellent’.
The main focus of the measurements is on the presence or absence of certain indicator bacteria that
define water quality. In contrast, the recently published Carinthian
Lakes Report determines the so-called ‘ecological status’ of the lakes, which is defined, among other things, by the population of
fish and aquatic plants in a lake.
Klaus Ehrenbrandtner, Managing Director of Carinthia Tourism: "The water quality assessed by
AGES and EEA is decisive for bathing enjoyment. We are therefore pleased to be able to announce again this year
that the water quality of Carinthia's bathing lakes has been consistently rated as ‘excellent’ in the
relevant evaluations. The publication of the Carinthian
lake report at the start of the season, even though its results have been known for some time, was not well
chosen because it can cause unnecessary confusion. This is because it does not deal with water quality, which is important for
bathers. Therefore, reference to the relevant AGES and EEA
evaluations is urgently needed here!"
Carinthia offers bathing fun and water sports in the purest water
Carinthia's lakes not only shine with their turquoise colour and picturesque landscape, in which they
are embedded, but also with their excellent water quality: according to the latest
measurement data from AGES bathing water monitoring (last monitoring of bathing sites on 2 June 2025)
, all Carinthian bathing lakes examined, including various bathing sites on Lake Wörthersee, Lake Millstätter
See, Lake Ossiacher See, Lake Faaker See, Lake Klopeiner See, Lake Turnersee, Lake Weissensee, Lake Keutschacher See,
Lake Rauschelesee, Lake Längsee, Lake Pressegger See, Lake Afritzer See, Lake Brennsee, Lake Silbersee and Lake Greifenburger
, have been certified as having ‘excellent bathing water quality’ .

Gerhard Hohenwarter, meteorologist at Geosphere Austria, knows the reasons behind the
excellent water quality of Carinthia's bathing lakes: "A well-developed
ring sewer system ensures that the water quality of Carinthia's lakes is not negatively affected
. Furthermore, Carinthia's lakes have a regular supply of fresh water from
precipitation and tributaries."
Carinthia has thus held a leading position in Europe for years. The European
Environment Agency (EEA) summarises the water quality measurements at 22,000 bathing sites in Europe
every year. On 20 June 2025, the EEA published its latest report: all of the more than 30 officially
tested bathing sites in Carinthia received the top rating of ‘excellent’ without exception.
This is also confirmed by Carinthia's holiday guests in the annual T-MONA guest survey.
The guests' rating of the ‘naturalness of the lakes and rivers’ and the water temperature
at Carinthia's bathing lakes was well above average, with a school grade of 1.6.
